My husband wanted drop front trousers to wear at Dickens Fair, so we hit the
fancy fabric store, and found, in the sale section, wool/silk material,
which he says is "like buttah". And he sewed them HIMSELF! And then went on
to make a frock coat. Pretty good when you consider he had only made a very
simple shirt 20 years ago to wear to a Ren faire.
I started sewing in high school, self taught, with horrible results, so I
took a home ec class to learn the basics. Then majored in Tech theatre in
college, so took the costume classes-History, Design, and Pattern Drafting.
I made all my kids' Halloween and dress-up costumes. I've done some theatre
costumes, but for the last few years, have been working on Renfaire
costumes-Household and noble costumes for my daughter and myself, and
Dickens fair costumes. Now my daughter has taken a sewing class, so she is
sewing her own costumes- good because we also go to local "period/fantasy
costume balls", for which she and her friends sew madly (usually until the
wee hours of the night before).
Right now I'm beading my noble dress. I have decided I hate beading.

But why waste your precious sewing time making what you can buy? And no
way
could I make a pair of lined wool slacks with fly front zipper as cheaply
as
I can buy them. Materials alone would probably be almost as much, and my
time is worth SOMETHING! (As I'm not retired yet, I have to ration my
sewing
time!)
