Quite frankly, I'm glad if the fabric store employees express an  interest.  
So often they are totally indifferent, if not downright  rude.  I just give 
them a simple, "early 19th century dress (or  whatever)." 
 
And as to the rude an indifferent, right now my nearest fabric store is a  
JoAnn's, where that is often the case, but I'm kind of stuck if I just need a  
spool of thread or something.  (The not-so-close JoAnn stores are  better, I 
have to admit.  And there is a Hancock's that isn't  bad.)
