Subject: Re: [h-cost] Corset at Manchester Galleries
It looks later to me, too, but the 17th century isn't my primary area.
Heck, it almost looks 18th century-ish to me....

They do look 17th cen., but later than the 1620-1640 date. They look very
similar to other examples that are dated 1660 and after. Also, and this is
why I'm wondering about the date, the neckline of the stays does not match
up to the dress necklines, at least not those in the artwork I've been
studying. Also, if they are from the date given, I don't know of any other
set of stays from that era, and I would very much like to be able to cite
them.

Subject: [h-cost] Corset at Manchester Galleries
While searching for something else, I found this corset on the Manchester
Galleries site.

It is dated 1620 to 1640, but to my eye it looks a bit later. Does
anyone
on the list know anything about this garment, and about how accurately
it's
dated?
thanks,
Melusine
