My husband stores a lot of data on CDs and DVDs, and has had data loss issues. His current solution is to buy brand name quality disks. After trial and error with several brands, he's settled on Memorex. It seems to be holding up the best over time.
My method is to have redundant backups. My web server is backed up onto CDs and onto another hard drive within our network. If I lose something, I have two chances of replacing it. I make new CD backups every year or two. I should do that more often, but...
