The bit about quality CDs is 100% accurate. Stay with the quality brands and they will last longer. An external hard drive (HDD) is an excellent secondary backup idea. Studies have shown that if HDDs are stored properly and treated with respect, they will actually last longer than CDs. Redundancy is the key here. For instance, my pictures are stored redundantly on at least three computers, work, home & laptop, as well as on CDs. Flash drives are another option for those with a limited budget. 4 GB flash drives are now under $60. External hard drives are under $100. Lots of choices out there. Pick one or two and run with it. After trial and error with several brands, he's settled on Memorex. It seems to be holding up the best over time. My method is to have redundant backups. My web server is backed up onto CDs and onto another hard drive within our network. If I lose something, I have two chances of replacing it. I make new CD backups every year or two. I should do that more often, but...
