Coming late to this discussion... My recollection, as a teenager in the English Midlands, is that "maxi" (i.e. calf-length) skirts came in with the film "Bonnie & Clyde" in 1967-8. They seemed really odd at first as we were so used to mini skirts. I got my first longer dress for a family friend's wedding around 1969-70. As a (university) student in the early 70s, I was wearing full-length skirts.
