The dress is most likely cotton or a cotton/linen blend. Cotton was very expensive before the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 (?) and the portrait is 1780-something. It was also a scandal! The QUEEN! In a chemise gown usually reserved for at home wear, not for public!!!! And doing common work!
