The strongest possible -1 I just saw that discussion on IRC, which I thought was a total waste of time. Closing this list and operating exclusively on IRC will make it much more difficult to contribute or to keep up with what's happening.
Reading IRC logs to find out what people have been talking about simply isn't feasible for most people (me included). Just to read todays logs and find out what people have been talking about would take most of tomorrow. IRC is a conversational medium and it's not arranged into topical groupings. These things mean it's impossible to do what we do here on -dev using IRC. There are plenty of worthwhile discussions on this list. That doesn't mean to say this list couldn't be better than it is. I think, for example, it's difficult to identify when a decision has been made. If I propose to implement something, how many +1's does it take before I should start doing it with a reasonable chance of not wasting my time. How many -1s (against all the +1s) does it take before the idea should be dropped - or completely rethought. Are there anyone's -1s that are more important. Maybe you'd say there aren't, but in reality there probably are. Also, when someone has decided to implement something - that needs to be made clear - and quite shortly afterward there should be some evidence that something is being implemented. Without making it clear who's working on what it's hard for people to lob suggestions or offers of help in the right direction. Working groups are an idea which seem not to have flourished (maybe I'm not looking in the right place) - but they should have.
