You can't really be serious here, right? I don't mind IRC being logged. I don't mind discussions being done on IRC and I honestly understand why they are being done on IRC. But there is a long way to go from shutting down the mailinglist and using IRC "only".
IRC can clearly be used as a useful medium for intra-project communication, but I would advise against using it as the only medium. As I said, I have no problems with issues being discussed on IRC, but binding votes should not be done there unless there is a consensus of doing a IRC meeting where people can plan on attending. IRC is ad-hoc and people pop in and out as they see fit. If we require people do read logs and that way discover that decisions has been made "over their heads" we're heading in the wrong way. I agree that the mailinglists also does make us read through endless debates and sometimes even meaningless votes. Our main problem is also one of our strengths; We have very opinionated members, myself included. This is both a blessing and a curse, but we need to find a way to balance the two. The second problem is the lack of doers, and the abundance of talkers. As for myself, I'm one of the opinionated talkers. I do try to limit myself to issues that I care about though, but perhaps my own insight isn't as good as I think it is. Instead of dismantling the list, how about actually using it for what is designed for? We all need to be disciplined, but hey, that's our damn obligation to our own project. If we can't do that, well, what are we doing here at all?
