Again, I think the impact is being so incredibly exaggerated. Look at this

How long does it take you to realize those are buttons at the bottom that
save or publish your content? Not even a split second, I guarantee it. Are
you saying that you're 100x smarter than every other person who looks at
that page?

I've included some of *the* top-visited sites by the average blogging-age
user there, where custom widgets are used on a very liberal basis. If you
can honestly still tell me a user can't understand what those buttons do
without sitting and thinking about it with a straight face, I'll concede the
point right now.
