I think those are poor examples to prove your point. For one, those are both products of the respective companies. I'm not sure we want to be the product of Apache.
Microsoft Excel is inextricably tied to Microsoft. Sentiments towards Microsoft affect sentiments towards Excel. I'm not sure we want to take on the liability of sentiments towards Apache negatively affecting us.
