Seriously, the last thing I did at the Technion computer center (before I graduated, therefore I left) was install mrelay. It was (mainly) to solve the open mail relay problems the Technion had back then, I guess it is solved by education now, and nowadays it is primarily used to store-and-forward mail to unavailable technion host, and to prevent anyone inside the Technion to spam anyone else (as it is the only machine able to TCP outside at port 25). I think that it the setup, anyway, but it's been a while (4+ years). As for the MX-pointing-at-A-records thing, I agree this is rare, but it is (or was) an issue sometimes. I guess MTAs got laxer when they were confronted with this. Try a really early postfix (back when Wietse Venema was even less pragmatic than DJB...).
