Ok. Let me try one more step. Agree there is some confusion - T1 has been
around along time and is used in a variety applications (with many name
modifications). Imagine 24 telphone lines each with a 64k modem and bonded
into one data channel 1.536 mbps. Or just think of a trunk with 24
distributed telephone lines. Both exampls are applications of T1. Or you
could have a T1 with 8 phone lines and the other 1/2 (768kbps) used as a
data channel. This only a fraction of the versitility of T1. 

We manage two T1's - one as a connection to an ISP (through a firewall) and
another one point to point at home. Actually, I prefer the term "nailed
down" (also called "private line")T1, "however point to point" is more
common usage. Nailed down is a cleaner term when talking with someone who
knows what it means and it is pretty much considered "locked down" and
secure. 

The advantage of T1, aside from security, is it has been around a long time
and there is a lot of used equipment at great prices (Ebay). We connected
via AT&T Paradyne DSU and a Ciscopro router (with Lan port) for something
like 25% of what the Telcom charges. We also did our own programing and
wiring (needs a crossover cable), after the Telcom installed a Hyperedge
box. My advantage is to have two sons pretty sophisticated in networks and
telephone systems. 

Bottom line - T1 has been around a long time and is probably the most stable
of all phone connections. It can be secure, it can be connected to public
networks - not secure. Equipment is affordable. It can be "full" T1 or it
can be fractional (price dependant). The tarrif is typically based on how
far (miles) the line travels. All these iterations may pass through multiple
swithces. It is up to the telcom to assure security. Certainly it is more
secure than a phone conversation.
