You're absolutely right. As it stands right now, the HL7 package provides no application level functionality. For restricted classes of applications, I've written code to generate more complete applications (and have done this in real applications, too), but at its current level of maturity, most interfaces are "hand crafted" in the sense that you describe. It seems to me very much like writing code directly in assembler or machine language without the benefit of a compiler, and wholly unnecessary.
