Lowest Level is the Console. Next is the X Window System. That does the nuts and bolts of turning bits into pretty photons. Next is the Window Manager. ( KDE, GNOME, TWM, ( and The One True Window Manager: Ratpoision ) ) Next is VNC. That shuttles the screen back and forth across the net. You COULD shuttle the X window system layer around the net.
