Actually, this ping is a non-standard HL7 message to which only VistA HL7 responds, not the network level ping (ICMP echo request) you have in mind. If it were me, I'd try netstat -an (first on the receiving machine) to see if a connection was ever initiated. You can also try a heavy handed approach like tcdpdump if all else fails.
