Look at your firewall.
Can you ping <from> the server?

Actually, this ping is a non-standard HL7 message to which only
VistA HL7 responds, not the network level ping (ICMP echo request) you have
in mind. If it were me, I'd try netstat -an (first on the receiving machine)
to see if a connection was ever initiated. You can also try a heavy handed
approach like tcdpdump if all else fails.

Hi,
First of all, I would like to say 'gently' hi to all of you. My journey with
VistA have just began a few days ago and this particular community already
helped me a lot. The newsgroup archive + wiki to which you contribute is
priceless!

Then I would like to add additional question to that Gregory just said.
I would like to use VistA as a HL7 ready HIS (I'm investigating the HL7
integration process), and then I need to start the non-DHCP application that
could communicate with VistA with HL7 protocol.
I looked around for a instruction how such a connection should be
established, but the only knowledge I have found was in the
ftp.va.gov/Vista/VistAdocs/Infrastructure/Health_Level_7_(HL7). I use HL7
client / server test tool and the "HL PING" option to test the "HL LOGICAL
LINK" to my listener.

Backing to the point, as Gregory said, the "HL PING" sends VistA
non-standard HL7 message - do anyone knows how this message looks like? Is
it standard ADT (for which I'm filtering on the client side?) or rather not?

btw1. In the archive I read about differences between the single vs.
multi-listener and the problems with the hosting system (I'm using VistA
with-in Cache 5.1). May I ask for directions, where to look for specific
differences between these modes? I tried both setting, but on my client side
I still obtain no messages, and VistA "HL PING" claims "no response".

btw2. In the great installation tutorial (thank you Nancy!) there is a
suggestion that the domain name my be VISTA.MYDOMAIN.COM - please consider
the fact that in the internet there is a domain like this (I found it when
DNS resoles this name instead of taking it form
Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file).
