As john Clemens said, I suspect the problem is with your listener setup. If you're using a single listener (I don't recommend this), use netstat to verify that the connection is open and running. Otherwise, you probably want to set up a listener using inetd or xinetd. I don't use Linux, but I've done this many times using TCPIP services (a.k.a. UCX) under VMS. That's pretty much the same thing.
