I guess I was thinking of the VistA Imaging package that depends on a commercial plug-in. The rest of the package is open-source, but none of us can use it without purchasing that $1000 commercial part. So in that case opensource + propietary(commercial) = proprietary(commercial).
So with OpenVistA, if they make the code available on their website and I download it, it likely won't work because it is configured for these commercial parts. So back to the original article, the OpenVistA package, as it is installed by Medsphere, is not completely opensource, and to me it seems reasonable to describe the net package as propriatary. Surely you aren't suggesting that because certain interfaces provided by 3rd party software vendors are proprietary, that the entire solution is thus proprietary? Does that mean when an Oracle RDBMS is running on Linux, the entire solution "=proprietary"? The customer had requirements for some interfaces that were not available in any distribution of VistA. Two vendors provided interfaces that met the requirements of the customer. Those vendors are in the business of supporting VistA and other similar systems and thus sell those interfaces. These vendors (who, by the way, were wonderful to work with) should not be slighted because they choose to market and support commercial software. - Ben
