It's just *not fair* of you to go back and actually *read* all that
complicated legalese in the GPL and inject rational and reasonable words
to put out a potential flame war even before one starts!!! Can you
imagine how the spectators in the Roman Coliseum must have felt when
Androceles met the lion??? 8-]
In a more serious vein, although the courts have never weighed in on
what distinguishes separate works from combined works, a common test
used by the community appears to be whether two pieces of code are
statically linked or dynamically linked. If two pieces of code, let's
say A which is GPL'd and B which isn't, are statically linked, then the
terms of the GPL will extend to the bundle that includes A and B. If A
and B are dynamically linked, then the GPL is considered not to extend.
Most M implementations implement dynamic linking between modules. Thus,
if A is in ^XYZ and B is in ^PQR, then the implication is that the GPL
of ^XYZ would not extend to ^PQR. If they are in the same module ^IJK,
then ^IJK would be covered by the GPL.
For example, with GT.M, we take the view that GT.M's GPL does not extend
to any code written in M or in C that calls or is called by code in M.
Any modification to GT.M itself would be covered by the GPL.

Note that the GPL has the following words that I think should help in the

"These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. If identifiable
sections of that work are not derived from the Program, and can be
reasonably considered independent and separate works in themselves, then
this License, and its terms, do not apply to those sections when you
distribute them as separate works."
While GPL'ed code does not equate directly to "open source", I think a
logical case can be made for being able to mix "open source" and
"proprietary" code in the proper manner and not cause one to become the
other.

I am no expert in Open Source, so I acknowledge up front that I may
well be wrong. But the paragraph above seems to address
"distribution", which seems to be a different issue from a package
that is an amalgamation of commercial/propriatary and open source
combined into one product. As per my other post, I wouldn't consider
VistA imaging to be truly open source because I can't use it without
purchasing a propriatary component.
