I have been playing with the Vcore voltages on my GA-7NNXP motherboard
equipped with an AMD XP 3200+ cpu due to heat issues. I have found
significant reduction in cpu temperature. The initial heat problem may have
been exacerbated by the board defaulting to a voltage of 1.7 when the AMD
spec is 1.65. Playing around I found what I thought was a strange phenomenon
and was hoping one of the hardware experts could explain.

If I change the Vcore to 1.525 at boot time and try to run Prime95, the
system re-boots. If I change it to 1.55 at boot, run Prime95 (which once ran
for almost 12 hours without errors at this setting--I chose to halt the
program) for several minutes and then change the Vcore to 1.525, Prime95 now
runs without errors.

Why does it run the second time with the same settings? Does this mean I am
at the line between stable and unstable, or have I already passed it? Should
I stick with the 1.55 volt? Other than random re-boots, what are the other
symptoms of excessive undervolting of the cpu?

Thanks for your input,

Jim Maki
