Well I'd imagine that most of what's in the old profile other than documents will not help you under a new install. Certainly you loose all the software installs, maybe the application data & .ini's are valid to restore after re-installing & updating/same grade/patching missing software. Time to backup what you have before you start playing further.

Can you boot the dead version in safe mode? If so, uninstalling drivers, ripping out all the 3rd party driver INF's "C:\windows\inf\oem*.inf" & driver references in the registry might get your borked copy back up & running to re-detect the correct drivers.

Otherwise you might try booting new install & erasing borked install's INF folder, then copy in the INF from new to borked to see what that gets you. Could also use new install to open borked registry & clean out the driver references.

Good luck!

Hi guys,

long story:

mainboard dies
replace mainboard with identical mainboard
machine bluescreens during bootup in an entirely non-helpful way
do repair installation of XP SP2; no change, still bluescreens
put harddisk in an entirely different machine with a different chipset, do another repair install of windows, no change

What. the. hell.

Suggestions?

the data on the disk is intact, but that windows install has utterly borked itself to FUBAR status, is there an easy/semi-easy way to transfer the profiles across to another install (which I've done and works) on the same disk

yes yes, I know, take backups...
:(

help plz.
