You can look at linuxmce, its nifty a neat idea, but still plenty buggy (in my experience)
Windows media center edition will control cable boxes through ir relay. I have an mce controlling three cable boxes so it gets the digital channels. Hdtv is still an over the air bit, but that's fine. Gives me a chance to rewatch 'Jericho' over the summer.
