Stan,
Great idea! I do have a Promise card and a Rosewill card. But, the PCI slot I have left to use will share its' IRQ with the on-board LAN Gb controller that will be active (hmm, possible, I suppose). The other PCI slot is dedicated to the old PCI FX5500 video card. Once I pick a PCIe-x1 or PCIe-x16 video card for replacement the old FX5500 will have to do. I know this reads like I am 'junk' building, but I'm really trying to re-use what I have until I can afford to move ahead with updates. Video card(s) being a next year project!
I am going to think about this some more tonight. Thanks!
Duncan

You could pop in an old Promise card to increase the number of PATA ports. Do you have one laying around?

The new Asus P5Q3 m/b is mounted to its' tray. Big sucker! It does appear to be very SATA and USB centric.
Can anyone speak to "JMicron" SATA? I thought SATA was SATA............

Most of my CDROMS, DVDROM/Burner devices appear to be just PATA. Do SATA devices even exist?

I think I may now search for PATA-2-SATA converters. This m/b only has one PATA-eide port, but I think that the case geometry will not support the normal cable length of the standard eide cable (included) for both the hard drive and DVDrom/Burner mounting points. I can do a temp mount of the HD to the FD carrier for initial startup and test, but this would not be my long-term decision.

I recall some discussion about several versions of these converters months back, but I can not find those msgs ATM. Recs and suggestions appreciated. I'll need to buy a bunch!
Thanks,
Duncan
