1. PATA to SATA adapters are cheap. I picked up 10 of them recently for $4 each off ebay. I'm re-using a bunch (9) of old PATA WD 250GB drives in a freenas/openfiler box as a project.
2. JMicron is just a name of a company that makes controller ICs. Think of them like Silicon Image, Promise, etc. That board has a JMicron controller to provide 2 more onboard ports than the 6 SATA ports provided by the Intel southbridge ICH.
