It was DRMed by someone...
My $10 player (AMIR) is too dumb for anything like that.
To play them on a computer you need a license and at least
a certain version of WMP, so I guess MS protects them.

If you don't finish the "book" on time, you keep the files and
just get another license for the same title...
IIRC, they let each license last a couple weeks.
That is generally plenty of time. (Unless the "book" runs 40 hours +...)

I focused more on the "free" part of the OP question.
Free streaming WEB audio is a lot easier.
