I traveled over the holidays to my Mom's. Her router is at the back of the house and I tend to stay on the other end. The wireless is hit and miss (so bad that my phone just didn't work on her wireless). So, this year I got a WD powerline system. I just plugged one end into her router (and powerstrip, not wall socket, which they claim you're not supposed to do) and the other unit into my laptop and a nearby wall socket. It worked great. I should have gotten a second wireless router so I could have provided wifi for my phone (anyone know of a good unit for that) that would plug into one of the ports on the WD unit.

The really good news is that this same WD powerline AV system works with my NETGEAR Powerline AV stuff. I just plugged one unit into a wall socket and instantly have 4 100 Mbit ports for internet connections. This works much better than just depending on wireless at all parts of the house...speedtest shows 40+ mbps in remote parts of the house. Basically, I have 8 additional internet ports that can be in two different parts of the house or travel with me.

Just thought I would report to the collective on recent Powerline stuff. It seems this hasn't worked very well in the past but things seem to work much better now.
