You're right, way too many choices. One important thing you left out is budget. You can find pretty basic 15" laptops for $500-$700 or even cheaper. You can also spend thousands. I personally recommend Thinkpads across the board. I've used Dell, Acer, and HP, and I think Thinkpad is a huge step above in terms of build quality and durability. I've used the X41 and now the X301 and find them to be built like tanks. I also find the Lenovo Ideapads to be very competent. If you are going to do some gaming, depending on what games you're looking at, you might want to make sure you get one with an AMD Radeon or Nvidia add on graphics. So... What is your budget?

I am in the market for a laptop, something in the 15" range. Laptop will be used for general purpose stuff around the house, some gaming and photo/video in a pinch. Not looking for an ultra portable or anything like that, would like decent battery life and hopefully be ~5-6 pounds, i5 processor (2nd gen). Been looking at Dell, Asus, HP, Lenovo and Acer. Too many choices! Any recommendations? Specific model or just a brand or two I should focus my efforts upon.
