I would like to retract a couple of lines of my last message of yesterday afternoon. I should not have repeated common stereotypes of either secretaries or administrators, even though I tried to make it clear that I was only characterizing the prejudices of others, and in no way espousing them myself. If even one reader was offended by my statements, I publicly ask for your forgiveness.
My intent was to say that too many people perpetuate the idea that a librarian's work does not require a good education and exacting training, but can be done by almost anyone. Adopting the trappings and language of the more technical professions may be a temptation for us in a business-oriented culture, but ill serves us since they do not entirely fit many of us. For those of us who work in a Humanties oriented segment of the field too much of value gets lost in the process, while we are forced to adopt too much that simply doesn't fit us.
