OK, here's more response. I am livid, frankly, at OCLC's action, and I feel that it exemplifies the greed and arrogance that have become so widespread in our society. I do have copyright background, and believe in safeguarding intellectual property (trademark or whatever, it really dosn't matter), but OCLC's action is beyond reason or sense, let alone decency. Are all of us in libraries that use Dewey supposed to pay some "protection" fee to OCLC? Any of us who teach people to use it? Who make posters about it? The Dewey Decimal system was the intellectual creation of Melvil Dewey. Period. OCLC has no more right to it than they do to, say, the air we breathe. (I know I'm not dealing in legal terms; I believe they are totally irrelevant to such nonsense.) I would like to see us publicize this case as widely and loudly as possibly, with the scorn it deserves. I would like to see OCLC laughed out of the courtroom, and certainly out of the courtroom of public opinion. The little creative Library Hotel owes them nothing. Actually, I think _we_ owe _them_ for creatively promoting libraries and reading. I would like to see our June convention in Brooklyn/NYC include an event, or at least an arranged visit, to the Hotel, with publicity, to support in this legalism and greed run amok situation.
