The current discussion reminds of a comment my brother made when I started library school: "Why do you need a master's degree to put the date stamp in a book?" I think most of the public doesn't have clue what it is we actually do and we don't do a particularly good job in explaining it.
Emory's program was called "Library and Information Management" and that is how I try to see myself in my current role as a reference librarian - managing the dispersal of various kinds of information in a library setting.
