I thank Aaron for his comments. Our Hebrew subject heading which we
translated into English as Expulsion was "Pinui" which actually means
clearing out of. That would imply the clearing out of both the
military forces and the settlers. However, while the military was
following its orders, the vast majority of the civilian settlers
chose the path of passive resistance to what they deemed was an
immoral act. The government, had it wished, could have "disengaged"
militarily from Gush Katif without expelling the settlers from their
homes and leave those who wished to stay, to live under the rule of
the Palestinian Authority. I doubt that many would have chosen this
route, but at least the choice would have been left up to them.
Instead, I am reminded of the frightening pictures of Jews physically
being thrown out of their homes. If this is not expulsion, I don't
know what is. And I don't know where the idea of Expulsion implies
that it must be perpetrated by a foreign power. In any case, we felt
that a literal translation, i.e "clearing out of" was rather
clumsy. We had thought of using the LC subject heading "Evacuation
of civilians" in referring to the settlers, but its usage seems to be
limited to instances of civil defense, disaster relief or other
emergency situations, which were clearly not applicable in this case.
So, if Aaron or anyone else can think of a more genteel term for
Expulsion which would "be comprehensible and non-offensive to all
sides of the political, ethnic and religio[u]s spectrum", we would be
happy to consider it.
