A member of the group has suggested to me that the term
"Abandonment of Gush Katif" would be less emotionally charged than
using the term "Expulsion" and I'd like to hear comments from list
members regarding its appropriateness. My problem with this is that
although there was indeed an expulsion of settlers from Gush Katif,
Israel has neither completely "abandoned" it nor "disengaged" from
it. So far as I understand, Israel still controls deliveries of food,
fuel and medicines as well as customs payments collected on goods
bound for the Gaza Strip arriving at Israeli ports. And of course
from time to time, there are incursions of Israeli soldiers into
Palestinian territory in order to deal with terrorist activity. There
are those who say that only a full scale invasion can put an end to
the terrorism and should that come to pass, we would be back to where
we started, with Israeli military rule over the area thereby
rendering the idea of "Abandonment" or "Disengagement" moot. It might
be worthwhile to discuss the whole topic at a cataloging session
during the forthcoming AJL convention so that hopefully a consensus
may be reached.
