The Association of Jewish Libraries Guide to Yiddish Short Stories is
the perfect reference work to answer questions of this sort. According
to the Guide, the story is Bontsche the Silent (Bontsche Shvayg in
Yiddish) and is by Peretz.

It can be found in The Peretz Reader edited by Wisse, and in A
Treasury of Yiddish Stories edited by Howe and Greenberg.
