It's Bontche Schweig or Bontche (Bontsha or Bontshe) the Silent depending on translator. The story was written by I.L. Peretz. There are well-wrought versions in The Seven Good Years and The Case Against the Wind, both translated by Esther Hautzig. It also appears in Ausubel's ATreasury of Jewish Folklore. And, there are both oral and online versions on Jewish Short Stories from Eastern Europe and Beyond. Sharon Elswit P.S.
