This appears to be level-3 mapped data.   We get similar looking data from
<oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov> and in that case the scaling works, but without
a proper provenance there are no guarantees.   The attribute data should include
a "Title" string like "HMODISA Level-3 Standard Mapped Image".  I often use
"ncdump -h" (with ncdump from hdf4, not from netcdf!), but the same information
is available in hdfview.
