You may want to try HDF-EOS plugin to see if the data looks good for you.

I could able to access HDF files downloded from NASA website.
I can read the data with available files which are all HDF4 files.

Our HDF5 library and Java JNI is built with .NET. Your XP
machine may not
have the required .NET component. This is a known problem.
