Yes, [~anu], please clarify what "we have broken so many of those classes 
already" means.  As I mentioned elsewhere, 3.x is DOA for large deployments if 
there is no compatibility.

(Lest you cite webhdfs as a compatibility bridge, it's a destroyer of clusters. 
 Semi-recently, webhdfs caused ~1w heap growth in ~1h.  We're talking 20GB+.)
