I have had great success using ratchet straps to tie down a halo in the
past and will be using this method again this year (that is, I made a halo
out of rope and used 8 ratchet straps to anchor that halo to playa
staples.) I hadn't thought of using ratchet straps for the halo itself, but
I suppose you could if they were long enough. You want the length of the
halo to be about 70% of the "circumference" of your yurt. So for a standard
H12, about 33', and for an 8' stretch yurt, about 22'. I used rope that was
thick enough that it looked like it wouldn't slice the panels when under
tension, but I don't know the exact size or rating. In the order of 300
pounds maybe? I just picked it by eye.

 Yeah, that sounds fine.

Cheers, Robert.
