Hello there... I just wanted to mention that my first HG is a modified
Musicmaker's, and you probably would be better off building from scratch. It
eventually turned out to be a pretty good instrument, but the only parts of
the original kit I actually kept are the soundbox and headpiece. I bought or
had my father make everything else, so it ended up costing about $1000.
Unfortunately, I gave it the huge F-holes they show in the catalogue, so the
soundbox isn't enclosed enough to provide much volume. That's it's main
drawback, but it would be pretty inferior if I hadn't replaced almost all of
the Musikmaker's parts. My favorite HG right now was professionally made
from the EMS kit, so I'll vouch that it can make a great instrument with the
right work. (Sigh...) I wish I were a luthier.

Thanks for the info... I've been making bagpipes for many years now as a
hobby and the pipes have been put down since a carpel tunnel surgery on my
right hand a few years ago. The last two fingers on my right hand dont like
the constant fingering needed to play the lower hand on the pipes. I still
make and play but not very often.....
I spent a while trying to find an instrument that I could play that
could free up my right hand from constant fingering and luckily I found the
Hurdy Gurdy..
So far I've made a simple hurdy gurdy from Brian Tolleys book and
surprisingly by following the instructions the instrument is in tune but
its just something to play around with or let a kid mess with , It's not a
serious players instrument.
Right now I'm working on a diatonic Symphonie model from plans I got
from David Kronberg and that's where I'm at now...
I would like to find some nice plans for a chromatic set that I can
build for my wife so we can play together when I get my new set, so if
anybody knows of good proven plans that I could get somewhere that has a
flat back please shoot me a line...
I thought about buying a kit from Musikmakers and modifying it but from
what I've heard it's not a good Idea...
Cheers, Seth
