It looks to me like a like a non-S-curved crank on the gurdy, and it
seems to be tied down with some leather, or something. That square
thing is a buckle on his clothes.

Don't get yourself in trouble again, for goodness sakes!!!

I see the square buckle "beneath" the hurdy-gurdy." What I see is what looks like the round end of the axle sticking out right where you'd expect to see the axle sticking out, a "finger's-width" below the soundboard - it looks like it has a square socket about 1 cm across (roughly, using the scale of the painting).

But it's hard to see any kind of detail looking at the link in question. How big is the original painting?
