I looked too and agree with Chris's comments
The gros boudon is just not there
The trompette / chien is a total mystery
Dreadful cottoning !

I was looking at the picture of the Varquain on his site, and some things
puzzle me.

There are 4 strings, but 6 tuning pegs.

The 'ears' are set up for 2 strings each, and there is a tirant tuning peg,
but no chien bridge that I can see. No chien either.

The bourdon bridges don't seem to be set up to take the 2nd string on either
side either.

Nice woodwork, but seems a bit unusual in design, at least to me.

  Marc,

Thanks for the offer. Ive ordered plans for the Varquain guitar-bodied
hg from Barry Black at blackboardcreations.com. Im sure there will be much
study and much reading going on before I jump in. Figured that if I can
actually build a Varquain and actually learn to play something in the next
10 years, then maybe Ill attempt a lute-backed versionno rush. Dont
expect the plans to arrive for another week or so, but when the time comes,
Im sure Ill be in contact with you and others as well.

BTW, Im in the Louisville, KY area

    Hello, All!

Another newbie comes out of hiding! Been reading for a week or two to
try to get a read on how hard it is to build an instrument. My take is its
difficult but not impossiblein fact, it sounds like it may be easier to
build than to actually learn to play it. Which is OK, because my
woodworking skills (not much to brag about) are still a sight better than my
musical skills. Anyway, Ive finally taken the plunge and ordered plans,
but dont expect construction to begin until the fall. Other projects in
line first.

So, if Im not around for a while, Im sure Ill be back before
construction begins. But good to know there is advice available.

    Thanks.
