Captain Couragious is a very significant movie as far as the gurdy is
concerned, for it was this film that inspired Chris Eaton to start making. When
I got my first Eaton in 1989 he told me that he had previousy been an engineer
making parts for missiles and wanted to make musical instruments instead. He
saw this film on UK Television sometime in the 70's and recognised that this
instrument would utilise his engineering skills. The sound of the hurdy in the
film has been identified by some as a string quartet.
The odd thing about the whole thing is that in the instrument in the book
translated as a melodeon. I have a rather fancifull theory that someone from
the props department of United Artists Pictures saw the gurdy and thought,
"hey, that would look good on film". If we could identify this person we will
know who was responsible for a major contribution to the hurdy-gurdy in the UK.
