In my experience, the recent revival of interest in spinning has been
a great benefit to us. Look for a local source of spinning supplies
(often the same as a weaving/knitting store) and ask if they have
cotton sliver - that's the name of the fiber prepared for spinning.
Or go to a web site like Cotton Clouds
http://www.CottonClouds.com/shopping/spinning.asp?cat=Fibers
to educate yourself about the options. You need very little to try
the fiber, less than an ounce, so finding a local store and making
your purchases there (you buy by weight) is more economical than
buying the minimums over the internet.
Or find the local spinning guild and see what its members can do for
you.
Good luck!

Riding on this thread--would anyone know any places to get cotton
around southern California by any chance?
