Here in UK, we have a great source of cotton. They are Texere Yarns and you
need their cotton slivers. $6 gets you a lifetime supply and it weighs so
little that freight cost should not be too prohibitive. Mail them at :

I think you'd have to live someplace warm, or have a
greenhouse, to grow your own cotton.
More about OB cotton: I think it's best for tekeros,
and maybe for the lowest drones of other hgs, because
it is rather coarse and grabby. That's what makes it
good, since it gets even the sometimes reluctant bass
drone to start immediately. It might be good for other
low-pitched hgs too. But for French hgs, at least for
those thin light chanters, maybe a light silky cotton
is better.
I tried using the "cotton" from a cottonwood tree on
my tekero once, (since I like using locally-grown
products) but I can report that it's useless. It's so
extremely soft and silky, it makes no sound at all. I
wonder how it would be on smaller hgs, though.

Used and tried almost all the cotton types I could
find, including OB.
I stick to Texere Yarns cotton(texere.co.uk). Slick
long fibres and not so
dry and hard as OB's.
