I regulary use tampon cotton since years. As cottoning hurdy-gurdies
is not what it was selected for, its quality varies by brand, region
and time.
Just ask someone you do not feel silly to ask for and give it a try.
If its good you now v'e got a longtime supply as the stuff is
compressed. If you do not like what you got it did not cost you a
cent. And you can still try else.
By the way tampon-cotton was what I first got recomended for the
french vielle by a well known belgian player in 1987.
Besides tampon-cotton I also use what I buy as cotton in the flower
shop. Its a dry twig with 2-5 cotton "flowers" on them usually
stocked for christmas decorations.
To me personally, every effort to achive cotton that gets beyond
asking a woman for a tampon is overrating the topic of cotton
qualities. I think cottoning is mainly practice, practice, practice.
