Great suggestion. The windings aren't the problem, but rather the core. A kink in a steel core can break it while leaving the windings perfectly intact and undamaged. However, heat shrink would probably keep the core from breaking as well by making the string a little stiffer and stronger at that point and by gripping the windings fairly tightly.

On the other hand, using a gut core also prevents the problem.
