I also play lute (handy movable frets!), and I found that when I
switched from equal temp to a meantone variety (which is closer to just), my
instrument sounded louder.  It resonates better with intervals that are more
natural.  Non-equal temperaments limit what keys will sound good, but those
good ones sound great.
