Marc,
I don't exactly know in mm, it depends on the instrument
I would suggest at the key pressure that gives a good clean note + 1 mm ?
I just tried it on my baroque Colson
Full key depression is around 10 mm
Clean note at 4 mm
The note I want at 5 mm
Full depression is 40 cents sharp !!!
I can tune down 10 cents by reducing pressure
So I got -10 to +40 available, more than enough to tune to equally
tempered
For me, playing an HG that has been setup for full key depression is
really
hard work
You only need enough pressure to set the note plus a little bit more

Hello,
as a luthier I have one question concerning
"This assumes that you have set your HG tuning up properly, i.e. not with
the
keys fully depressed"
How much mm should this mean???

Colin,
I as have said before, almost all the important "bad" notes from the
equally
tempered instuments are sharp to the just tempered instrument
You simply tune your notes "on the fly" by increasing (mostly) or
decreasing
(rarely) key pressure
Use your ears !!
This assumes that you have set your HG tuning up properly, i.e. not with
the
keys fully depressed
You need to setup the tuning with the keys significantly less than fully
depressed
This makes for a much easier, lighter touch and gives you adequate
pressure/pitch adjustment
You only really need to do it with longer sustained notes, particularily
with cadences

I agree.
The short answer to "how do I play along with other instruments" (of the
fixed-pitch type generally talked about, of course) is either "you don't"
or
"badly". ;-)
Of course it's possible but needs fiddling with the tunings all around.
Whether it's worth it depends on your own, personal views, I suppose.
I have certainly played drone instruments (mainly NSP) with other
non-drone
instruments. Depending on the notes used, one can sometimes get away with
a
lot (like not playing a certain melody note that clashes badly) but
playing
something else instead and, often, getting away with it.
Luck of the draw.

Hello all,
Up to me (Who is that?) one has to chose to play on an instrument whith
drones like on a Hg and play "drone music" and hence not temepered or
tempered music (together whith other not drone instruments) and to tune
tempered but without drones....
Or is this to simple???

Of course, there is also the "your fault" method.
That's glaring at the guitar player etc when you hear an odd sound :)

I have the same problem, I also play in G, C, D both minor and major.
It
is for example not possible to tune the A exactly to G, C and D, which
gives especially problems if I use matching drones. For a long time I
tried to find the best compromise (always depending on the music I
played during a period), but meanwhile I prefer to use a temperated
tuning with a few exeptions (e.g. the e matching exactly to c). It
gives
less fun to play barock-music but makes life easier and most of the
auditory doesn't realise the difference.
I never had special problems playing with other melody instrumenst as
flute, recorder, violin, ... no matter wheter I play equal or
temperated
tuned.
But in my experience drone instuments don't fit well with guitar
(rhythm
not picking) - there are always a lot of queer notes resulting from
the
guitar's chords and the drones. If I play together with guitar I sense
the sound very "swampy". By time I have a trio with violin/viola and
cello, a combination I like very much.
What are your experiences?

One thing I never understood quite well, and I have asked and no one

For my particular situation, in which I am going to play in a band
with the following instruments
acoustic guitar
bass (either bass acoustic guitar or eletric bass)
silver flute
recorder or clarinet or tinwhistle (one of them, since it's the same
player!)
violin (probably tuned in just/perfect fifths)
voice
(percussion)
and provided I stick to regular HG tunes in G major, G minor (both
with a D trompette), C major and C minor (both with a C trompette - I
have a capo on my trompette for that), and maybe D and D minor
(disengaging the G and g chanterelles, engaging the D chanterelle
(3rd
chanterelle) and playing with a D trompette and raising a drone to D)
Can I tune my HG to just temperment and still play this standard HG
tunes with my mates? Remember, the two other main melodic
instruments -
the violin (in perfect fifths) and the flute - are pretty fluid in
intonation, but the guitar and the bass aren't that much because of
the
frets...
Will we sound better than if I just give up and accept the
imperfection of equal temperment?
I like Graham's article a lot and I intend to experiment just
temperment on myself, but I want to know if I will sound any better
in
the band using these adjustments.

Hi All,
for those of you with an interest in intonation in relation to
the
hurdy gurdy, I've just come across a top article on the web.It
includes a vey practical hands-on guide. Perhaps someone on the
forum
could embed it on the "Links" page for us all.
