I played last night with a couple other guys. Some of them sounded very good
and some did not. I think part of it is hardware. I went out and purchsed a
plantronics usb headset. I don't know how much interaction my headset has
with the sound card, but I had relatively few problems. The only problem
with voice that I ran into was that my modem(half-duplex voice) had taken
over my directx directsound resources. I disabled the modem and everything
worked. One of the guys I played with was using a SB Live! Platinum with a
plantronics RCA headset. He sounded very clear. I have a SB Live! Vaue and
have not had problems with it and the sound. Maybe there is something
specific to your setup emberts. Another guy that was playing had a funny
situation with his system. Here is a snip from an email from him:
I 2 had problems ... not with the D/L but with voice update here is
what i
found worked 4 me
1. I have a SoundBlaster card
When I would start up I would always have EAX support on.......no
more of
that...I now have that turned off both in CS (options) and in the
pop-up
window for BLASTER also I would run CS with the BLASTER pop up in
the tool
bar....no more of that either. I think EAX has a lot to do with this
...
also I turned off the whole play CD while I'm in CS ... I never
listen to
music but did it just in case.
2. I had to go into the HALF-LIFE folder and find the
VOICE-TWEAK.exe and
play with that till it sounded alright
Once I did this I CANNOT touch any volume controls at all..... once
again I
CAN'T TOUCH THE VOLUME if I do it seems to reset into some weird
config and
then gives me the drive already in use warning.
3. I have 2 mic inputs 1 on my card and another on a control panel
on the
front of my computer.......I have to use the MIC input that is in
back
directly on the sound card...but for some reason I have to put my
headphone
jack in the input on the front control panel... I have no ideal why
this is
but that's the only way I could get it to work.
4. I play with the sound going thru the headphones and thru my
speakers.....
I can hear the player voices better this way. If I try to play only
sound
thru speakers I again get the driver error and that's no good.
I agree that the installation/setup/configuration of the voice over IP
technology is very cumbersome. Just look at this guys problems and fixes.
Its goofy. It took me an hour of messing with my sound before I discovered
what my modem had done. The point I am trying to make though is that once
you have it all configured properly it works great. Since I have a SB Live!
and know 2 others who have Live! cards and no problems I would not blame
your sound card yet. Most likey I would say the problem is in your config.
The best thing I guess is to play with your settings until you find
something that works.

What is it in player setup that really effects this? You can adjust volume,
and that's it. I hear players that are surprisingly clear - impressively
clear, in fact. But those are rare. Many sound distored and badly broken
up - is that a setup issue? It doesn't sound like their volume is too high
or too low - unless there is some sort of VOX feature that only transmits
sound above a certain level. In player setup, my levels are set to max, and
my voice still sounds badly broken up.
